Make a Footed Serving Board with Bow-tie Inlay

It’s been cold and rainy for days here in Indy so I took the first chance I had to get out into the shop the moment things cleared up. 

I didn’t have any requests from friends or family at the moment so I set out to make an item to add to our stock for our online shop.

I had a cherry off cut set aside that I had been saving for a board, but I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do with it. I didn’t want to make a basic board, and I didn’t want to do a wild loopy handle paddle style cutting board.

I kind of had my heart set on doing something with feet, a board that could be used as a centerpiece on a dining table when its not spending its time adorned with delicious meats and cheeses.

Now that I know I want feet, the question of wood expansion comes into play. Luckily, I had some pretty wide walnut boards I had just picked up from Hood Farms here in the Indy area. I planned to do a short foot with the grain running the same direction as the board. I sliced off a couple of chunks for my feet, and joined them to the board with a grooved mortise after implanting a bow-tie to 
stabilize the split. 

I finished the board with a food safe orange oil and beeswax finish called Feed-N-Wax made by Howards.

I am really happy with the style of the board, and I am considering making this style of board a permanent fixture in our shop. The board you see here will be for sale soon here on our website.
